In addition to having been beaten by officers of the National Civil Police, Robinson Ortega was illegally detained, even though he identified himself as a journalist and showed an ID card proving his identity. Because of his injuries, he was taken to a private hospital and in these conditions his first statement hearing was held, where the judge determined his innocence.
