Zamin Zaki is an Azerbaijani social worker, human rights defender and civic organiser. In 2022, he founded the Ubuntu Social Work Association, a non-profit initiative established to strengthen social-work education and professional development in Azerbaijan. The association organised free educational webinars, created a space for social workers and students to exchange knowledge and translated resources on inclusive social-work practices into Azerbaijani.
Zaki was arrested on 9 April 2025 as part of the reopened “NGO case”, a wide-ranging investigation targeting independent civil-society representatives and organisations that received foreign grants. The prosecution alleged that he had laundered grant funding and abused his official authority. He has consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against him are politically motivated and linked to his legitimate and professional works within civil society. International organisations recognise him as a political prisoner.
