According to the investigation, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, lawyer Dmytry Talantov repeatedly condemned the actions of Russian troops and supported anti-war protests in posts on his Facebook page. He was initially accused of spreading ‘knowingly false information’ about Russia's army. Talantov is the first Russian lawyer to be prosecuted under this article. He does not admit guilt and could face up to 15 years in prison.
Dmytry Talantov's colleagues do not rule out the possibility that he is being persecuted for his professional activities: shortly before his arrest, he became one of the defence lawyers for journalist Ivan Safronov on trial for a politically motivated high-treason charge. He became the third lawyer in the case, while the first two had to stop defending Ivan and leave Russia. Talantov spoke about how the investigation into Safronov's case is hampering the work of the defence lawyers. Also, that the witnesses during the search of Talantov's house were linked to law enforcement agencies.
In general, the situation in Russia is such that lawyers who defend people in anti-war cases are particularly at risk.
