Habib ur-Rahman Taaseer spent nearly a decade in Pakistan working as a reporter for Deutsche Welle before returning to Afghanistan, where he continued his media career with various outlets. Initially, he worked as a reporter for Radio Killid and later served as its Editor-in-Chief. In recent years, he also collaborated with Radio Azadi (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty).
Following the return of the Taliban regime and the subsequent ban on Radio Azadi's operations, Mr. Taaseer began working as an independent journalist. In addition to his media work, he is an accomplished writer and designer who has dedicated many years to cultural activities. He is the author of the book Kulliyat-e-Noor Mohammad Taraki.
During an interview with the head of the provincial hospital in Ghazni, Mr. Taaseer was arrested by Taliban forces. He was accused of collaborating with Radio Azadi and detained after a voice recording on his phone was interpreted as blasphemous. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

The Taliban have brought two charges against him:
1- Working with Radio Azadi, whose broadcasts are banned in Afghanistan. 2- Blasphemy, based on an audio clip in which he jokingly says: “I’m in the mosque, and the mullah is talking nonsense—it made me feel sick.” He then added that he had left the mosque.
