HRD's bio and work

Khatira Jami is an Afghan women’s rights defender from Herat. She was a sociology student at Herat University before the Taliban banned women and girls from continuing their education. Following the ban, she established an online book platform with around 88,000 followers to help preserve access to books, knowledge, and learning resources, especially for women and youth.

She also founded a women-focused book café in Herat, which provided a space for reading and learning but was closed by Taliban authorities in November 2024. Through her work, Jami continues to promote the right to education, access to information, and women’s participation in public life.
