Narges Mohammadi is a prominent human rights and women's rights activist in Iran, known for her fight against the death penalty and her defense of women's rights. She was the spokesperson for the Defenders of Human Rights Center and is considered a strong advocate for civil liberties in Iran. Due to her peaceful activism, Mohammadi has been imprisoned several times. In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts in defending human rights, a recognition she received while still imprisoned.

Since May 2021, Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced in various branches to a total of more than 17 years in prison, 154 lashes, and 6 years of exile. The details are as follows.

Ms. Narges Mohammadi was sentenced by Branch 1177 of the Criminal Court 2 of Qods Judicial Complex in Tehran to 30 months of imprisonment, 80 lashes, and two fines.

Her next sentence was issued by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, where she was sentenced to 8 years and 2 months of imprisonment, 74 lashes, 2 years of exile, 2 years of prohibition from membership in political groups, and 2 years of prohibition from social media and telecommunication activities.

In another ruling from the same branch, she was sentenced to 15 months of imprisonment. Additional punishments included reporting monthly to the police for 2 years, a 2-year travel ban, prohibition from joining political parties and groups for 2 years, and 3 months of daily 4-hour community service cleaning areas under municipal supervision.

Her next sentence was issued by Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Mazloom, sentencing her to one year in prison.

She was again sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, to 15 months of imprisonment, 2 years of exile outside of Tehran and its neighboring provinces, a 2-year travel ban, 2 years of prohibition from membership in social and political groups, and 2 years of prohibition from using a smartphone.

In another ruling by Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, she was sentenced to an additional one year in prison.

On 4 December 2024, Narges Mohammadi was temporarily released from Evin Prison after being granted a 21-day suspension of her sentence.

On 12 December 2025, she was re-arrested while attending a memorial service in honour of human rights lawyer Khosro Alikordi and charged with 'spreading propaganda against the system' and 'assembly and collusion against national security'.

On 7 February 2026, Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison for “assembly and collusion against national security” and 18 months in prison for “propaganda against the state”, as well as to two years of internal exile in the city of Khosf and two additional years of travel ban.

In early February 2026, Narges Mohammadi was transferred to Zanjan Prison, in northern Iran.
