In prison (sentenced)
Alexei was born into a prominent Moscow family. His mother, Elena Liptser, was a lawyer in the most high-profile trial of the 2000s, the Yukos case, in which Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev were convicted and lost their businesses in Russia. His grandfather is Lev Ponomarev, a Soviet and then Russian dissident who was the first "foreign agent" of the Russian Federation in his personal capacity.
Alexei was a Harry Potter fan in his youth.
Alexei's wife, Mila, and their little daughter Stesha, are waiting for Alexei to be released. After the birth of the child, they began planning to move to a new apartment, began renovations and took out loans.
His first high-profile case was the one of Ildar Dadin in 2016, the first person convicted for repeatedly violating the rules about holding rallies, who received a prison sentence and was tortured in a colony. Together with his colleagues, the lawyer obtained the cancellation of the verdict form the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation as well as compensation for Dadin.
Alexei was also a lawyer for one of the Khachaturian sisters. Then, in 2019, their story shocked Russia: the family's father had been abusing and raping his daughters for years, and they finally murdered him in an act of self-defence. The case was not only a reflection of the terrible situation of domestic violence in the country, but also an illustration of a common approach in Russia itself, where weaker people are disempowered and the stronger ones can do whatever they want.
Along with Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Liptser was arrested in October 2023 and accused of participating in an "extremist community" (political opposition's structures were declared ‘extremist’ by the authorities in 2021) - they do not admit guilt. Igor Sergunin, a lawyer who worked with Navalny, was also arrested in the same case. Two other former lawyers of the opposition leader managed to leave Russia, but were arrested in absentia and put on the wanted list.
The investigation believes that Navalny's lawyers, who defended the politician for several years, "took advantage of their status" and regularly passed on his letters from the colony. In this way, Navalny "continued to perform the functions of the leader and head of the extremist community," the investigation said. The authorities added the three lawyers to the list of people and organisations about whom there is information regarding their involvement in "extremist activities" or "terror". Their bank accounts were frozen.
In February 2024, the opposition leader and political prisoner Alexei Navalny, sentenced to 19 years in a colony and defended by these lawyers, died in the colony.
Memorial considers unlawful the decisions to initiate criminal proceedings in connection with the creation of an extremist community and participation in it against Alexei Navalny, his associates and now his lawyers.
