Shamshad Agha (Shamshad Aghayev) is an Azerbaijani journalist, editor and media trainer. He founded the independent news website Arqument.az in 2014 and serves as its Editor-in-Chief. In 2016, he co-founded Toplum TV, where he worked as an editor and hosted programmes on social and political issues. He began contributing political and social commentary to Meydan TV in 2021 and worked as an editor from 2022. He has also trained young journalists through the Democracy School and participated in initiatives defending freedom of expression.
On 5 February 2025, Agha was arrested in connection with the “Meydan TV case”. On 6 February, the Khatai District Court ordered his pretrial detention. Additional accusations were brought against him on 28 August 2025. His trial remains ongoing before the Baku Grave Crimes Court. On 13 October 2026, it was reported that he had been transferred to the Penitentiary Service’s Specialised Medical Institution No. 3.
He was charged with multiple offences, including money laundering, tax evasion, and other alleged financial and economic offences. He and his co-defendants have consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against them are politically motivated and linked to their legitimate and professional works within media. International organisations recognise him as a political prisoner.

In January 2026, Amnesty International identified him as particularly at risk because of a gastric ulcer and the denial of necessary healthcare. He has also publicly described poor conditions and medical neglect in the prison medical facility. On 13 October 2026, his relatives reported that serious health problems had prompted his transfer to Specialised Medical Institution No. 3 of the Penitentiary Service.
On 12 October 2026, witnesses were questioned before the Baku Grave Crimes Court in the “Meydan TV case”, in which Shamsad Agha is a defendant. The trial remains ongoing.
