Artyom Krieger is a journalist at SOTAvision, an independent social and political media focused on reporting on human rights violations and political persecution in Russia. Kriger, who joined SOTAvision in 2020 as a student, had covered protests in Russia and court cases against critics of the war in Ukraine. The journalist also live-streamed and interviewed Russian opposition politicians.
On 21 September 2022, Artyom Krieger was providing live coverage of a protest against Putin’s “partial mobilisation” in Moscow for SOTAVision’s YouTube channel when he was arrested without any explanation by the police who, paying no attention to his press vest and press card, took him away in a police truck and detained him for 24 hours.
On 18 June 2024, he was detained on suspicion of involvement in the Anti-Corruption Foundation, a project of the opposition leader and political prisoner Alexei Navalny, who was sentenced to 19 years in prison and later died in a detention centre.
Artyom's uncle, Mikhail Krieger, is an anti-war activist and political prisoner sentenced to seven years in prison.
