Elnara Gasimova is an Azerbaijani journalist whose work combines video reporting with coverage of social problems and human rights. Born in Baku on 5 February 1996, she completed the Baku Journalism School programme in 2016. Before joining Abzas Media, she contributed to Meydan TV, Mikroskop Media, Open Azerbaijan and Voice of America. At Abzas Media, her work also included contributions to reporting on corruption.
Gasimova has experienced police interference while carrying out her professional duties, including detention while covering a protest in 2021. On 13 January 2024, she was detained after attending questioning in the “Abzas Media case”. On 20 June 2025, the Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced her to eight years’ imprisonment. The Supreme Court dismissed her cassation appeal on 3 April 2026 and upheld the sentence.
She was convicted on multiple criminal charges, including money laundering, tax evasion, and other alleged financial and economic offences. She and her co-defendants have consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against them are politically motivated and linked to their legitimate professional work in the media. International organisations recognise her as a political prisoner.

Elnara Gasimova has reported physical violence, intimidation and degrading detention conditions. In November 2024, she and her colleagues reportedly faced violence after protesting the closure of ventilation openings in their cells. Amnesty International documented allegations that restraint techniques used by guards left visible bruises. In July 2025, following a hunger strike, she was reportedly placed in solitary confinement without showers, ventilation or open windows. She has also reported damp cells, poor sanitation and irregular access to hot water. Her transfer to the remote Lankaran Penitentiary Complex in September 2025 significantly complicated visits by her family and lawyers.
On 3 April 2026, the Supreme Court dismissed Elnara Gasimova's cassation appeal and upheld her eight-year prison sentence in the “Abzas Media case”.
