HRD's bio and work

Ahmad Mukhtar is an Azerbaijani freelance photojournalist who has worked independently and supplied photographs to various media outlets. His photography covers current affairs, social and political events, and conflict-related developments. He previously taught photography at the Baku School of Journalism.

In December 2024, Mukhtar served 20 days of administrative detention on allegations of petty hooliganism and disobeying police. In August 2025, he was arrested in connection with the “Meydan TV case”. On 28 August, the Khatai District Court ordered his detention for 40 days. He remains in custody while his trial continues before the Baku Grave Crimes Court.

He was charged with multiple offences, including money laundering, tax evasion, and other alleged financial and economic offences. He and his co-defendants have consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against them are politically motivated and linked to their legitimate and professional works within media. International organisations recognise him as a political prisoner.
