HRD's bio and work

Sevinj Vagifgizi (Abbasova) is an Azerbaijani investigative journalist born on 5 July 1989. A journalism graduate of Baku State University, she worked for independent newspapers and Meydan TV before taking on the role of Editor-in-Chief at Abzas Media in 2022. Her work examines corruption, social injustice and human rights abuses, with particular attention to the wealth and business interests of senior officials and the presidential family.

Her journalism has exposed her to sustained pressure and surveillance. In 2021, her phone was identified as having been compromised by Pegasus spyware. Following the arrests of her colleagues, she voluntarily returned to Azerbaijan and was detained at Baku airport on 21 November 2023. She was prosecuted in the “Abzas Media case” and, on 20 June 2025, the Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced her to nine years’ imprisonment.

She was convicted on multiple criminal charges, including money laundering, tax evasion, and other alleged financial and economic offences. She and her co-defendants have consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against them are politically motivated and linked to their legitimate professional work in the media. International organisations recognise her as a political prisoner.

Allegations / reports of ill-treatment

Sevinj Vagifgizi has reported retaliation in detention for exposing prison conditions and abuses. According to her family, authorities restricted deliveries, including an electric fan during extreme heat. After joining a hunger strike in July 2025, she was reportedly placed in solitary confinement in a room without adequate ventilation or shower facilities. Following her transfer to the Lankaran Penitentiary Complex in September 2025, she and her colleagues reported being housed with smokers despite requests for smoke-free cells. The transfer also made family visits more difficult because of the distance from Baku. On 18 October 2025, her mother and sister reportedly faced repeated, intrusive searches and rough treatment during a prison visit, including the forcible removal of her sister’s shoe despite her recent foot surgery.

Recent case update / evolution

Her lawyer confirmed in July 2024 that an application challenging the lawfulness of her pretrial detention had been lodged with the European Court of Human Rights.
