HRD's bio and work

Nargiz Absalamova is an Azerbaijani journalist whose reporting covers environmental problems, social inequality and human rights, particularly the experiences of marginalised communities. Born in Baku on 17 July 1998, she entered journalism in 2019, working with Toplum TV and Mikroskop Media before joining Abzas Media in 2021. She has also contributed to the feminist platform Fem-Utopia. Her work was recognised with a Free Media Award in 2025.

Throughout her career, Absalamova has encountered police interference and detention while reporting. On 30 November 2023, she was detained after attending questioning in connection with the “Abzas Media case”. On 20 June 2025, the Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced her to eight years’ imprisonment. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence on 3 April 2026, dismissing her cassation appeal. She is held at the Lankaran Penitentiary Complex and continues to document prison conditions from detention.

She was convicted on multiple criminal charges, including money laundering, tax evasion, and other alleged financial and economic offences. She and her co-defendants have consistently rejected all charges, maintaining that the criminal proceedings against them are politically motivated and linked to their legitimate professional work in the media. International organisations recognise her as a political prisoner.

Allegations / reports of ill-treatment

Nargiz Absalamova has reportedly faced punitive detention conditions and inadequate medical care. After joining a hunger strike in July 2025, she was reportedly placed in solitary confinement without adequate ventilation or shower facilities. Her pre-existing sinusitis has worsened in detention, causing breathing difficulties and severe headaches. In June 2026, Amnesty International reported that she had been denied a medical examination for four months, despite requests for an MRI scan and repeated appeals by her lawyer. Her transfer to the remote Lankaran Penitentiary Complex has also significantly hindered access to her family and lawyers.

Recent case update / evolution
